Mom's Banana Pudding
Southern-style banana pudding with homemade vanilla custard, fresh bananas, and toasted meringue.

Mom brought this to every potluck and it never came home with leftovers. She layered it in the same Pyrex dish for 30 years. I haven't had this in years as I'm the only one in my family that eats banana pudding โ but thankfully she wrote this one down on a card tucked inside and old Good Housekeeping cookbook.

Ingredients
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1/3 cup cornstarch
- 3 cup s whole milk
- 4 egg yolks
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 box nilla wafers
- 4 ripe bananas

Make vanilla pudding from scratch โ cook milk, sugar, cornstarch, egg yolks on stove until thick. Add vanilla and butter off heat. Layer Nilla wafers, sliced bananas, pudding in dish. Repeat layers 3 times ending with pudding. Top with meringue (beat egg whites and sugar to stiff peaks). Brown meringue under broiler 2-3 min. Chill at least 4 hours.
